Synopsis

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway has reopened for heavy vehicles after a three-week closure caused by heavy rains and flash floods. Authorities have prioritized the clearance of stranded fruit-laden trucks, which had been awaiting passage to markets across India. The prolonged closure had led to political tensions, with local leaders accusing authorities of negligence. In response, alternative measures, including a dedicated parcel train for transporting Kashmiri apples, were initiated. The reopening is expected to alleviate logistical challenges and support the region's economy.

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway (NH44), a vital link between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of India, has reopened for heavy vehicles after being closed for approximately three weeks due to severe weather conditions. The 270-kilometer stretch had suffered significant damage from heavy rains and flash floods, leading to the suspension of traffic. While the highway had partially reopened for light motor vehicles earlier, the clearance for heavy vehicles marks a significant development. Authorities have prioritized the movement of stranded fruit-laden trucks, which had been awaiting clearance to transport perishable goods to markets across the country. Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic-Rural) Ravindra Singh emphasized the importance of following traffic advisories and avoiding overtaking to prevent accidents and further blockages.

The prolonged closure of the highway had led to political tensions in the region, with local leaders alleging negligence and accusing authorities of deliberately hindering the Valley's economy. The fruit industry, being time-sensitive, faced significant losses due to the delay in transportation. In response, the Jammu and Kashmir administration initiated alternative measures, including the operation of a dedicated parcel train to transport Kashmiri apples to New Delhi, aiming to mitigate the impact on growers and traders.

The reopening of the highway for heavy vehicles is expected to alleviate the logistical challenges faced by the region's economy. However, authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely, as the region remains susceptible to adverse weather events that could affect road infrastructure. The restoration of full connectivity is crucial for the timely movement of goods and the overall economic stability of Jammu and Kashmir.
