The Maharashtra government has joined hands with Finland to modernise Mumbai's historic Sassoon Dock, one of the city's oldest and busiest fishing harbours. The project aims to introduce modular infrastructure to address overcrowding, hygiene, and operational challenges, while promoting sustainability. Discussions have included advanced fishing techniques, digital tools, and eco-friendly solutions to improve efficiency and fishermen's incomes. The initiative reflects a broader push for international cooperation and technology transfer in port development, ensuring Sassoon Dock evolves into a clean, modern, and efficient fishing hub.
The Maharashtra government has announced a collaboration with Finland to modernise Mumbai's Sassoon Dock. Built in the 19th century, the dock is currently under pressure due to operations exceeding its original capacity, which has led to concerns about hygiene, odour, fish handling standards, and safety.
The modernisation plan focuses on introducing modular infrastructure to manage operational challenges and environmental concerns. This approach is expected to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and transform the dock into a world-class, sustainable fishing harbour.
State minister Nitesh Rane, who oversees fisheries and port development, met with Finnish officials and representatives of Finnish companies at the dock to discuss strategic plans for the upgrade. Key areas of discussion included advanced fishing methods, adoption of digital solutions, and eco-friendly innovations to enhance the efficiency of operations and improve earnings for fishermen.
Officials emphasized that the project offers significant scope for international cooperation, particularly in technology transfer, which could help integrate global best practices into Mumbai's fishing industry. The government is confident that the collaboration will lead to a safer, cleaner, and more productive harbour while preserving the historical significance of Sassoon Dock.
