Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, has granted a 30-year concession to JSW Infrastructure Ltd for an infrastructure project worth INR 740 crore. The agreement covers the reconstruction of Berth 8 and the installation of rail-mounted quay cranes at Berths 7 and 8 within the Netaji Subhas Dock.
The project includes a 25-acre backup area to support smooth cargo handling. These enhancements are expected to increase the terminal's capacity to manage approximately 5 lakh TEUs annually, improving container throughput and operational efficiency.
The concession is part of a broader effort to modernize the Kolkata Dock System. Over the past decade, SMPK has undertaken multiple upgrades, including improvements to container handling at existing berths, dredging of channels, and better logistics facilities to reduce congestion. These steps have gradually strengthened trade and cargo flow along India's eastern coast.
JSW Infrastructure Ltd brings prior experience in port and terminal development across the country. The company has previously managed projects involving container handling, bulk cargo operations, and terminal modernization, which positions it to handle the scale of work at Kolkata effectively.
Key officials from SMPK and JSW Infrastructure attended the signing ceremony, marking a milestone in port development in eastern India. The project aligns with ongoing national efforts to strengthen port infrastructure and support growing trade volumes along India's eastern coast.
