Synopsis

Residents of Signature View in Mukherjee Nagar have begun vacating their flats after a structural audit by IIT Delhi declared the building unsafe. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is providing rent support to those relocating, offering INR 50,000 per month to families from three-bedroom flats and INR 38,000 to those from two-bedroom flats. Many residents, however, are seeking more time to secure alternative housing before the demolition process begins.

Families living in the Signature View apartments in Mukherjee Nagar have started moving out as the Delhi Development Authority has begun offering rent assistance to those who vacate. Residents from three-bedroom flats are being offered INR 50,000 per month, while those from two-bedroom flats are being given INR 38,000 per month.

The move follows a structural audit by IIT Delhi, which declared the building unsafe and unfit for occupancy, prompting plans for its demolition. A court has set a deadline for all residents to vacate the premises. By the end of August, about 200 families had already left, and around 110 more are expected to shift out before the court's deadline in early October.

Some residents have requested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to extend the vacating deadline, explaining that arranging suitable accommodation at short notice has been difficult. The DDA had floated a tender earlier in the year to appoint an agency for the demolition and to manage debris disposal at authorised MCD dumping sites. The authority has not yet issued a formal response to the residents' appeals for more time.

While the DDA's rent assistance offers temporary relief, the limited time available to find alternative housing has created uncertainty and stress for many families. Authorities may need to consider deadline extensions or additional support measures to ensure that residents can transition safely and without undue hardship during this critical phase.
