The initiative involves reconstructing berth 8 and installing rail-mounted quay cranes at berths 7 and 8, supported by a 25-acre backup area, aimed at boosting container cargo handling efficiency. The terminal is expected to manage around 5 lakh TEUs annually. Port authorities emphasised that the project aligns with the government's vision of modernising India's port infrastructure.
The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), recently formalised a 30-year concession agreement with JSW Infrastructure Ltd, covering a project valued at INR 740 crore. Under the agreement, berth 8 will be reconstructed, and rail-mounted quay cranes (RMQCs) will be installed at berths 7 and 8 at Netaji Subhas Dock, part of the Kolkata Dock System. A 25-acre backup area will support the enhanced cargo operations, facilitating faster and more efficient container handling.
The terminal, once operational, is projected to manage five lakh twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually. SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman highlighted that the project demonstrates the port's commitment to strengthening infrastructure and improving trade facilitation, reflecting the Centre's broader vision of world-class ports. The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Chairman Samrat Rahi, senior officials of the Kolkata Dock System, and representatives from JSW Infrastructure, including Director Devki Nandan.
By modernising berths and equipping the terminal with advanced RMQCs, the port is set to accommodate growing container traffic and reduce turnaround times. The project reinforces the port's focus on long-term infrastructure development while supporting India's broader maritime trade ambitions. Both parties affirmed their commitment to timely execution and maximising the terminal's potential over the 30-year concession period.
