Mumbai is set to witness a major leap in urban mobility with Metro Line 2B, the east-west corridor, approaching a key milestone. Phase I, spanning Mandale to Chembur over 5.39 km, has entered the statutory safety approval stage. Authorities, including the Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, have inspected the stretch and issued directives to ensure timely completion. Once certified, the line will enhance travel efficiency, reduce road congestion, and seamlessly integrate with other metro lines, monorail, and suburban rail networks, promising a transformative urban commuting experience.
The Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, along with officials from MMRDA and Maha Mumbai Metro, conducted a detailed inspection of Metro Line 2B's Phase I stretch between Mandale and Chembur. They provided strategic directives to facilitate the project's timely completion.
Earlier in the week, the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) team carried out critical inspections, marking an essential step towards obtaining the statutory safety approvals required for commercial operations. Once the certification is granted, the stretch will be cleared for public use.
Phase I of Line 2B includes five stations: Mandale Metro, Mankhurd Metro, BSNL, Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, and Diamond Garden. When the entire corridor from Mandale to DN Nagar becomes operational, it is expected to reduce travel time by 50-75%, significantly enhance east-west connectivity, ease road congestion, and lower pollution levels. The line will integrate seamlessly with four other metro lines, the monorail, and the Central and Western suburban railways, establishing a fully interconnected transport network.
This infrastructure upgrade is designed not only to provide a faster and safer commute but also to underpin Mumbai's broader vision of integrated, multimodal urban mobility. By linking key city corridors efficiently, the project aims to stimulate economic growth, enhance commuter convenience, and modernise the city's transport landscape.
Once fully operational, the corridor is expected to transform the daily commute for thousands, offering a faster, more reliable, and environmentally sustainable travel option. By connecting multiple transit systems, the line will strengthen Mumbai's integrated mobility framework and set a benchmark for future city infrastructure projects.
