Ranchi police have stressed the need for proper tenant verification after recent criminal incidents in the city. Many landlords have not been reporting new tenants to the authorities, even though regulations require it, creating gaps in safety monitoring. Police have directed all stations to collect tenant information and plan awareness campaigns to educate landlords on their responsibilities. Following these events, Ranchi's Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ajit Kumar, issued directives to all police stations mandating the collection of tenant details within their jurisdictions. He emphasized the seriousness of the matter and announced plans to launch awareness campaigns to educate landlords on the importance of tenant verification.
However, when officials from several police stations were contacted, it was revealed that tenant verification practices were either minimal or nonexistent. For instance, the in-charge of the Lower Bazar police station admitted that no tenant verifications had been conducted since his appointment a month ago. Similarly, officials from Lalpur police station reported no verifications, while those from Bariatu, Hindpiri, and Chutia stations acknowledged conducting few verifications, attributing the low numbers to landlords' failure to submit rental agreements and tenant background details.
Police officials have pointed out that it is the landlords' responsibility to inform the police when a new tenant moves in. They noted that while owners of larger apartment complexes often comply, those managing smaller accommodations frequently neglect this crucial practice.
The lack of tenant verification has raised concerns about the potential for criminal elements to exploit rental properties. In response, the police are intensifying efforts to ensure compliance with tenant verification regulations, aiming to enhance public safety and prevent misuse of rental accommodations for illegal activities.
