Synopsis

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has launched a large-scale fire safety audit covering more than 25,000 buildings across the city. This move is designed to tackle the risks posed by substandard firefighting equipment and low preparedness among building occupants. Certified third-party agencies will be empaneled to carry out periodic audits in line with the National Building Code. The program also includes training sessions for building occupants to improve emergency readiness, aiming to ensure safety and compliance in various types of buildings across the city.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has initiated a detailed fire safety audit across more than 25,000 buildings in the city. The audit will cover a wide variety of structures, including schools, hospitals, offices, factories, malls, and high-rise residential buildings. The focus of this initiative is to address concerns over low-quality firefighting equipment and inadequate preparation of occupants for fire emergencies.

At present, there are no strict regulations governing suppliers or installers of fire safety systems, which has often resulted in substandard equipment being installed. Such equipment may fail during emergencies, increasing the risk of damage and putting lives at risk before fire services can respond.

To tackle this, the Municipal Corporation will empanel certified third-party agencies to perform regular audits. These agencies will inspect firefighting systems, check their compliance with Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications, and assess whether building occupants are prepared to handle emergencies. This ensures that both the equipment and the people relying on it meet safety standards.

Beyond checking equipment, the initiative will also provide training for occupants. Certified agencies will guide building residents, staff, and workers on how to respond effectively during a fire, reducing potential harm and ensuring a structured emergency response.

Through this comprehensive approach, the Municipal Corporation aims to strengthen fire safety across Chandigarh. By combining rigorous equipment inspections with occupant training, the program seeks to reduce risks and promote a culture of safety in all types of buildings.
