Synopsis

The construction of the new Sadhu Vaswani Bridge in Pune's Koregaon Park area has reached around 50% completion, with the completion timeline now extended to March 2026. The delay is mainly due to the challenges of building over active railway tracks and rerouting essential utilities. Since the old bridge's demolition in 2024, commuters have faced long traffic diversions, affecting daily travel. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is working closely with railway authorities to manage disruptions and ensure the project progresses efficiently, while the new bridge aims to improve connectivity and ease congestion in the area.

Construction of the new Sadhu Vaswani Bridge in Koregaon Park, Pune is progressing steadily, with roughly half of the work completed. The project, originally scheduled for an earlier finish, now targets completion by March 2026. The delay is primarily linked to the complexity of constructing a bridge over active railway tracks and the need to reroute several utilities safely.

Since the old bridge was demolished in 2024, commuters traveling between Koregaon Park, Wadia College Chowk, Bundgarden, and Council Hall have had to use alternative routes, causing longer travel times and daily inconvenience.

The new bridge will have four dedicated lanes for vehicles, doubling the capacity of the former two-lane structure. This design is intended to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Koregaon Park and VVIP Circuit House Road. Currently, commuters are navigating via Mangaldas Road, Wadia College, and Bundgarden Road to reach these areas.

A PMC official highlighted that building the bridge above railway tracks requires careful planning to prevent disruption to train operations. To achieve this, the civic body is coordinating closely with railway authorities. The demolition of the old bridge was also carried out as a joint effort between the PMC and railway officials.

Recently, the PMC has requested railway authorities' approval to install a water pipeline beneath the tracks, as the previous pipeline above the old bridge cannot be accommodated in the new structure. A plan has been developed to lay the pipeline under the tracks, and tunnel construction is already underway.
