Mumbai's historic Elphinstone Road Over Bridge, a key east-west link connecting Parel and Prabhadevi, will be closed for vehicular traffic ahead of its demolition and reconstruction. The bridge, over a century old, will be replaced with a modern double-decker structure as part of the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector project by MMRDA. The upgraded bridge will feature dual carriageways on both levels, enhancing connectivity between central Mumbai, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. A detailed traffic management plan has been devised to minimise inconvenience during the closure.
Officials have confirmed that the British-era Elphinstone Road Over Bridge (ROB), which has served as a crucial link between Parel and Prabhadevi, will be closed for vehicles from Friday midnight in preparation for its demolition and reconstruction. The Mumbai Traffic Police issued a notification regarding the closure and outlined a traffic management plan to operate until the new Elphinstone Bridge and the Worli-Sewri connector open for vehicles.
The bridge, which has stood for over 100 years, will be rebuilt under the Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector project led by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The Traffic Police had previously considered closing the bridge in April, but postponed the decision after determining that it would cause significant congestion in Dadar, Lower Parel, Curry Road, and Bharatmata areas. Following a reassessment, a plan to manage traffic post-closure was devised, allowing demolition to proceed.
The existing Elphinstone ROB measures 13 metres in width and accommodates only 1.5 lanes of traffic in each direction. The new double-decker structure will feature two levels: the first level will provide a 2+2 lane carriageway for traffic between Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and Senapati Bapat Road, while the second level will offer a 2+2 lane carriageway linking traffic from the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu) to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL).
The Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector, extending 4.5 km, will have dual four-lane carriageways, creating a direct connection between the MTHL and BWSL. This infrastructure is expected to significantly improve east-west connectivity across Mumbai, linking the city's northern and southern coastal roads along the west coast.
Once completed, the new double-decker bridge and Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector will provide smoother traffic movement, reduce congestion in central Mumbai, and enhance connectivity between key arterial routes. Motorists can expect more efficient travel across the city, while careful traffic management during the closure aims to minimise disruptions. This project underscores the city's ongoing efforts to modernise its ageing infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing urban population.
