The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has sent notices to more than 3 lakh property tax defaulters, whose outstanding dues total around INR 400 crore. These dues have accumulated over one to six years. The civic body has a target of INR 275 crore for the current financial year and has already collected INR 125 crore. An amnesty scheme offering up to 95% waiver on penalties was introduced earlier this month. The NMC aims to meet its full collection target to fund its share in the Simhastha Kumbh Mela and ensure financial stability.
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has stepped up its efforts to recover pending property taxes by issuing notices to over 3 lakh defaulters, whose total unpaid taxes are estimated at around INR 400 crore. These dues have been accumulating for periods ranging from one year to six years. For the current financial year, the NMC has set a collection target of INR 275 crore and has already collected INR 125 crore, leaving about INR 150 crore yet to be recovered. In comparison, the civic body exceeded its target last year by collecting INR 256 crore.
To encourage timely payments, the NMC introduced an amnesty scheme earlier this month. Defaulters who clear their dues by the end of October are eligible for up to 95% waiver on penalties, while payments made in November will get an 85% waiver. Normally, a 2% monthly penalty is charged on unpaid property taxes, in addition to recovery charges for notices and warrants sent to defaulters.
The recovery drive is crucial for funding the NMC's 20% contribution to the INR 15,000 crore Simhastha Kumbh Mela plan, which has been submitted for state government approval. Meeting the full property tax collection target is also essential for the civic body to qualify for funding under the 15th Planning Commission.
Earlier this year, the NMC had auctioned 73 properties of major defaulters who owed more than INR 1 lakh each. This was part of a broader effort to recover over INR 250 crore in unpaid property taxes from more than 1.5 lakh defaulters. Prior to the auctions, the civic body had issued both first and second notices to over 5,000 defaulters.
