Synopsis

Adani Power has secured a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project in Madhya Pradesh, investing around INR 21,000 crore. The project includes an additional 800 MW awarded under a first-of-its-kind greenshoe mechanism, following the earlier 800 MW contract. Both units will be developed under the DBFOO model and are expected to be operational within five years. The plant will contribute to Madhya Pradesh's energy security, create thousands of jobs, and expand Adani Power's already significant footprint, as the company plans to increase its generation capacity to over 41 GW by 2032.

Adani Power has won a contract to set up a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh, investing around INR 21,000 crore in the project and associated infrastructure. The company received a letter of award from MP Power Management Company (MPPMCL), which included an additional 800 MW under a "Greenshoe Option."

The total awarded capacity of 1,600 MW builds on Adani Power's earlier success in securing an initial 800 MW in the same tender. This is the fifth significant power supply order the company has received in the past year, bringing its total awarded capacity to 7,200 MW. The new capacity will be supplied from two units of 800 MW each, developed under the design, build, finance, own, and operate (DBFOO) model in Anuppur district. Both units are expected to be commissioned within 60 months from the appointed date.

The additional 800 MW has been awarded at the same tariff of INR 5.838 per kWh as the initial capacity. This marks the first adoption of a greenshoe mechanism in a coal-based power procurement tender in India, which is expected to support Madhya Pradesh's growing electricity demand driven by industrialisation and urbanisation, enhancing energy security in the state.

The CEO of Adani Power, S B Khyalia, expressed satisfaction over securing both the initial and additional capacities. The coal linkage for the plant will be provided under the Government of India's SHAKTI Policy. The project is projected to generate 9,000-10,000 jobs during construction and about 2,000 permanent jobs once operational.

Adani Power's current operating capacity stands at 18.15 GW from 12 thermal plants, with a goal to reach an overall generation capacity of 41.87 GW by 2031-32. The company's thermal capacity is spread across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu, alongside a 40 MW solar plant in Gujarat.
