Synopsis

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), under the supervision of Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, carried out a detailed inspection of the Atal Setu earlier this week. Officials observed minor surface distress along a two-kilometre stretch on the Navi Mumbai-bound carriageway, attributed to heavy monsoon conditions and continuous traffic load. The contractor has been instructed to repair the patchwork within five days, alongside strict enforcement actions including financial penalties and an extended defect liability period.

Under the guidance of Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, a comprehensive inspection of the 22-kilometre Atal Setu was undertaken by Additional Metropolitan Commissioner and Project In-Charge Shri Vikram Kumar, IAS.

During the review, the MMRDA team confirmed that minor surface distress was found only in patches along a two-kilometre stretch between km 14 and km 16 on the Navi Mumbai-bound carriageway. The deterioration was attributed to seasonal monsoon extremes and constant traffic pressure.

The authority has directed the contractor, Daewoo-Tata Infrastructure Projects, to complete resurfacing of the affected section within five days. Officials stated that if the contractor fails to comply within this period, additional action would be pursued against them.

As part of enforcement measures, MMRDA has already imposed a penalty of INR 1 crore. In addition, the contractor's defect liability period, which was earlier set to conclude in January 2026, has been extended by one year. The authority also specified that after the monsoon, the entire stretch will be permanently rebuilt at the contractor's cost using Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) and Asphalt Concrete (AC).

Reiterating its stance, the MMRDA team conveyed that Atal Setu continues to remain structurally strong and safe, while assuring citizens of its commitment to strict monitoring and swift remedial measures to safeguard the reliability of the landmark infrastructure.

By combining immediate repair directives with financial and contractual penalties, the authority reinforced its commitment to maintaining quality standards. With permanent reconstruction scheduled after the monsoon, officials reassured the public that Atal Setu remains structurally sound and that stringent oversight would continue to guarantee the long-term durability of the project.
