More than 600 trucks were stranded on Mizoram's National Highway 306 (NH-306), also called NH-6, due to the deteriorating condition of the Sairang-Kawnpui stretch. Around 339 trucks carrying essential commodities to Aizawl were halted at Kawnpui, while 264 empty trucks bound for Assam were stuck at Khamrang. Repairs made between July and August failed to hold. Mizoram Merchant Association (MIMA) and the Northeast Transporters' Union have warned that transportation of essential goods could be stopped during the next rainy season if the highway is not improved.
Over 600 trucks faced major delays on Mizoram's NH-306/NH-6 as the Sairang-Kawnpui section became nearly impassable again. This highway is a key route linking Mizoram with Assam and the rest of India through Silchar. Although the section underwent repairs in July and August, it has deteriorated, making transport of goods increasingly difficult.
By Sunday morning, 339 trucks carrying essential commodities to Aizawl were stranded at Kawnpui, and 264 empty trucks heading to Assam were stuck at Khamrang. Authorities had released over 500 Assam-bound trucks between Sairang and Khamrang the previous day, but the overall problem persists, affecting the supply chain in the region.
In response, MIMA and the Northeast Transporters' Union have decided that essential goods and other cargo may not be transported during the next monsoon if the highway's condition is not restored. MIMA president PC Laldinthara said the organizations met in Aizawl and agreed to coordinate efforts to highlight and address the issues caused by the dilapidated highway.
The stranded trucks include both loaded and empty vehicles, highlighting the disruption to commerce in Mizoram. Traders and transporters emphasized that the repeated deterioration despite repairs raises serious concerns about maintenance and the readiness of NH-306 to handle heavy transport, especially before the rainy season returns.
