Synopsis

The Gurugram district administration reviewed progress on the demolition of unsafe towers at Chintels Paradiso, Sector 109. Three towers have already been razed since demolition began in January, while the fourth is nearly down, and Tower D is expected to be next. Six towers in total D, E, F, G, H, and J were declared unsafe by IIT Delhi experts and cleared for demolition. Towers A, B, and C remain under a Supreme Court stay. Residents have raised concerns about being excluded from discussions, delays in work, and the sudden halt of court-mandated rent payments. Completion this year appears unlikely.

The district administration's internal committee recently held a review meeting on the ongoing demolition at Chintels Paradiso in Sector 109, Gurugram. This meeting was limited to officials, and neither the builder nor the resident welfare association (RWA) was included. According to RWA president Rakesh Hooda, the association was told it was an internal review and, therefore, they were not provided with the minutes of the meeting.

Demolition at the residential society had started in January this year after a partial collapse inside the complex claimed two lives and raised major safety concerns. So far, three towers have already been demolished, while the fourth is almost fully brought down. The work on Tower D is likely to start in the coming weeks. Authorities had earlier approved the demolition of six towers D, E, F, G, H, and J based on structural audits carried out by IIT Delhi, which declared them unsafe for occupation.

At the same time, demolition of towers A, B, and C has been stalled following a Supreme Court stay order obtained by residents. That petition is still pending before the court, and its outcome will determine the next steps for those towers.

Inspections were carried out by district officials to check whether proper safety guidelines are being followed during the ongoing demolition. Following this, the developer was directed to speed up the work. Chintels vice president JN Yadav stated that the company is taking all necessary precautions during the process.

However, residents continue to face difficulties. Hooda pointed out that rent payments, which had been mandated by the Supreme Court to support displaced families, were suddenly stopped. He also noted that given the pace of work, it does not look possible for the demolition exercise to be completed within this year. Responding to these concerns, Yadav said the delay, combined with the uncertainty around the Supreme Court petition, made it impossible for the developer to continue paying rent for an indefinite period.
