The Union Cabinet yesterday approved four multitracking projects for Indian Railways, worth INR 11,169 crore for 574 kilometers across six states. This move is aimed at increasing network capacity, enhancing train speed, and easing congestion on some of the busiest sections of the railway network. The projects are expected to be completed by 2028-29 and will result in additional freight traffic of nearly 96 million tonnes per year, while also generating about 2.34 crore man-days of direct employment during construction.
The Union Cabinet recently approved four multitracking projects for Indian Railways, with a total investment of INR 11,169 crore. The projects, spanning 574 kilometers, will be implemented across six states: Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. This move is aimed at increasing the railway network's capacity and enhancing the speed of trains.
The government stated in a release that the multitracking will ease operations and reduce congestion, providing much-needed infrastructure development on the busiest sections of Indian Railways. The capacity upgrades are expected to result in an additional freight traffic of 95.91 million tonnes per year, while also generating about 2.34 crore man-days of direct employment during their construction. The projects are expected to be completed by 2028-29.
The four approved projects include the Itarsi-Nagpur 4th line in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad)-Parli Vaijnath doubling project in Maharashtra, and the Aluabari Road-Siliguri-New Jalpaiguri 3rd and 4th line in West Bengal. A fourth project will also add 3rd and 4th lines to the Rajkharsawan-Dangoaposi-Jaroli route, covering Jharkhand and Odisha.
These are considered some of the busiest sections in the country. The capacity increase is expected to not only help ease traffic on these routes but will also improve the average speed of both freight and passenger trains. The projects are aligned with the Prime Minister's vision for a modern India and the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
