The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently conducted an inspection drive at the Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel, taking action against numerous violations of safety and civic regulations. The drive, carried out by multiple departments, found illegal structural alterations, unauthorized extensions, and kitchens operating without proper licenses or fire safety measures. This special focus on Kamala Mills, a high-footfall area that experienced a tragic fire in 2017, is part of the BMC's wider effort to ensure compliance and prevent future incidents. Officials have served notices and issued stop-work orders, with further inspections planned across other commercial hubs in the city.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently conducted an inspection drive at the Kamala Mills Compound in Lower Parel, taking action against a range of violations. According to officials, multiple commercial establishments on the Kamala Mills premises were found not following various civic rules. These violations included making alterations to approved structures and building unauthorized extensions. The drive was carried out jointly by the building and factory department, along with the health and license department.
A civic official from G South Ward stated that the focus was on ensuring structural and fire safety compliance. The official added that they were also checking if operating licenses and eating house licenses were in place and confirmed that notices had been served to several units. Some rooftop setups and enclosed areas with changed usage were demolished during the action. In addition, kitchens operating without health licenses or mandatory fire safety measures were issued stop-work notices.
A senior official stated that further inspections will continue across other commercial hubs and mills in the city, especially those prone to overcrowding and usage changes. This drive has a special focus on Kamala Mills due to its high number of visitors and a tragic fire in a rooftop restaurant there in December 2017, which claimed 14 lives and led to stricter scrutiny of such places. The civic body has urged all commercial property owners and restaurant operators to follow safety, structural, and licensing norms to avoid punitive action.
