Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has launched a block-level property mapping and numbering initiative to streamline property identification and strengthen property tax collection. Each neighbourhood will be segmented into blocks of roughly 100 houses, with each ward hosting several blocks. A GIS survey is set to begin shortly, covering thousands of houses citywide. Previous attempts led to numbering of over 12,000 properties, and municipal records for new areas will be digitized by next year. This effort forms part of a broader smart-city upgrade involving traffic, water, sewer, energy systems and an enhanced command centre.
The Prayagraj Municipal Corporation has rolled out a block-level mapping and unique property numbering system to make property identification faster and tax collection more efficient. The city's 100 wards will each be divided into approximately five to seven blocks, each containing around 100 houses creating an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 blocks across the city.
A GIS survey firm has already been tasked with the work, and the ground survey is expected to kick off within the next few weeks . Each house will receive a unique identifier that incorporates the locality's name, for example "T-Block A" in Teliyarganj, enabling seamless tracking even if ward boundaries change over time.
This isn't the city's first attempt at such a system. A few years ago, efforts began in areas like Mumfordganj, with over 12,000 houses already numbered before the initiative was discontinued. Now the drive has been revived on a larger scale, backed by fresh planning and better coordination.
Alongside the mapping project, officials are preparing property records (khasra files) for newly merged municipal areas. These will be integrated into municipal archives and uploaded online by next year. Current GIS data identifies about 178,000 building properties in Prayagraj, but tax payments have thus far been made on only around 50,000 properties revealing a significant compliance gap.
The block-level numbering drive is part of a broader smart-city enhancement effort. Upgrades are underway for traffic management, water and sewer systems, energy monitoring, and the city's Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) is being modernised to improve coordination and service delivery.
This follows earlier smart city governance innovations in Prayagraj, such as a control room to monitor urban services like garbage trucks, streetlights and parks, supported by real-time data and complaint registration via mobile app. Another recent development was a pilot digital twin strategy, covering key wards with 3D GIS basemaps, panoramic imagery and MIS integration to improve revenue transparency and assessment accuracy.
