The Maharashtra cabinet approved multiple major infrastructure and transport projects across the state, including the Wadala-CSMT-Gateway of India Metro Line in Mumbai, a ring metro in Thane, Pune Metro extensions, and Nagpur Metro Phase-II. State participation in suburban rail expansions and the Pune-Lonavala third and fourth line project was finalized, with local bodies also contributing funds. Social welfare schemes for persons with disabilities were enhanced, and policies on fly-ash use, labor law amendments, and scholarships for Scheduled Tribes were approved. Key developments in Thane and Nagpur, including elevated corridors and an IBFC, were also cleared.
The Maharashtra cabinet recently approved several major infrastructure projects across the state, including the Wadala-CSMT-Gateway of India Metro Line in Mumbai, officials confirmed. Other key approvals include a ring metro in Thane, extensions of Pune Metro's Line-2 and Line-4, and Phase-II of the Nagpur Metro. The government also sanctioned loans for these projects, with the state assuming contingent liabilities, according to the Chief Minister's Office.
In Pune, two new stations-Balajinagar and Bibwewadi-on the Swargate-Katraj metro corridor were approved, along with the relocation of the Katraj station. These developments will require an additional outlay of INR 683.11 crore. The cabinet also approved the state's participation in suburban rail expansion projects under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3, 3A, and 3B, and sanctioned funds for the third and fourth lines of the Pune-Lonavala suburban railway.
Financial aid under the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana and the Shravanbal scheme for persons with disabilities was increased by INR 1,000, raising monthly assistance to INR 2,500. The cabinet cleared a policy for utilizing fly-ash generated by thermal power plants operated by state-run Mahagenco. Amendments to the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act, 2017, and the Factories Act, 1948, were also approved.
In education, the state will implement the Centre's pre-matric scholarship scheme for Scheduled Tribes students in Classes 9 and 10, replacing the state-run Golden Jubilee Tribal Pre-Matric Scholarship.
The Metro Line-11 project (Wadala-CSMT-Gateway of India) in Mumbai, with a budget of INR 23,487.51 crore, received formal approval. The long-pending issue of the state's financial participation in the Pune-Lonavala suburban railway third and fourth line project was resolved. Proposed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), the total cost of the project is INR 5,100 crore, including land acquisition. The Central and State Governments will equally share financial responsibility, with Maharashtra contributing INR 2,550 crore. Local bodies will contribute as follows: Pune Municipal Corporation 20% (INR 510 crore), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation 20% (INR 510 crore), and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority 30% (INR 765 crore), with the remaining amount provided by the state. The project aims to ease the growing passenger load on Pune-Lonavala suburban rail services.
In Thane, a new elevated corridor connecting the city with Navi Mumbai International Airport will be developed on a public-private partnership basis through the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO). The cabinet also granted in-principle approval for the development of an International Business and Finance Centre (IBFC) as part of the "New Nagpur" project, involving the acquisition of 692 hectares of land in Hingna taluka, Nagpur. The Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority will also develop an outer ring road along with four truck and bus terminals.
Additionally, the cabinet sanctioned INR 3,750 crore for constructing a new High Court complex at Bandra (East), Mumbai.
