Since 2011, the West Bengal government has distributed 2.26 lakh land deeds for home construction, along with 1.80 lakh agricultural deeds and 47,000 forest deeds, strengthening land rights for vulnerable communities. Purba Bardhaman district alone has received 28,840 home deeds. The initiative complements the state's Banglar Bari scheme, launched in December 2024, which provides up to INR 1.20 lakh for rural families to build permanent homes. Despite funding hurdles from the Centre and some implementation challenges, the program has advanced housing access. By granting legal, inheritable ownership, the land deeds empower families with stability, collateral for credit, and a path to long-term economic security.
In a significant stride towards land reform and poverty alleviation, the West Bengal government has distributed a total of 2.26 lakh land deeds for home construction since 2011. This initiative is a part of a larger push to secure housing for the state's most vulnerable population and has also seen the distribution of 1.80 lakh agricultural land deeds and more than 47,000 forest deeds. The program's success is particularly evident in the Purba Bardhaman district, where 28,840 home deeds have already been granted.
The move comes as the state government's "Banglar Bari" housing scheme has faced funding hurdles from the central government, a political impasse that has underscored the importance of the state-led initiatives. Launched in December 2024, the "Banglar Bari" scheme provides eligible rural families with up to INR 1.20 lakh to construct their own homes, a crucial step toward converting temporary mud houses into permanent "pucca" structures. This state-funded approach, while facing some implementation challenges like a percentage of beneficiaries not completing construction up to the required lintel level, is seen as a way to ensure timely disbursement of funds to the rural populace.
By providing legal and inheritable ownership rights, these land deeds serve as a powerful tool for social and economic empowerment. Secure land tenure gives beneficiaries the stability to invest in their properties and livelihoods, while also providing a form of collateral for accessing credit.
