The Kerala state cabinet has approved a loan of INR 1,500 crore from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) through the Kerala Urban and Rural Development Finance Corporation (KURDFC) to fund the LIFE Mission housing scheme. The loan, spread over two years, will finance the construction of over 127,000 houses for homeless and landless families, with priority for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries. The Kerala state cabinet approved an INR 1,500 crore loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) through the Kerala Urban and Rural Development Finance Corporation (KURDFC) to support the LIFE Mission housing scheme. The loan will be distributed over two years, with INR 750 crore allocated for each year.

Of the total amount, INR 1,100 crore will be used for the construction of 127,601 houses currently under development. The remaining INR 400 crore has been earmarked for providing housing assistance to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe beneficiaries in gram panchayats where these communities constitute the majority of the LIFE Mission list. The repayment of the loan will be spread over 15 years, with the government covering the annual interest from the development fund.

Alongside the housing initiative, the cabinet approved welfare measures for Scheduled Tribe members. A total of 52,864 elderly members in tribal communities, as well as residents of semi-government institutions, will receive INR 1,000 each as an Onam gift. The funds for this initiative, totaling INR 5.28 crore, will be drawn from the Chief Minister's distress relief fund.

The government also decided to create new teaching posts in government nursing colleges. One assistant professor and one associate professor post will be established in select colleges in Pathanamthitta, Kasaragod, and other districts. Additionally, two assistant professors and one associate professor position will be added in specific nursing colleges to strengthen medical education infrastructure.

Further, nine new Kerala State Beverages Corporation (KSBC) FL warehouses were inaugurated in districts including Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode. The cabinet also allocated staffing positions, including civil excise officers, to ensure the smooth functioning of these warehouses.

The cabinet reviewed the progress of files pending clearance and instructed departments to meet previous deadlines. Projects submitted under the Rebuild Kerala Initiative were also approved. The Public Works Department?s projects cover three major road developments, while the Local Self-Government Department?s projects include construction and maintenance of three roads in rural areas.

The LIFE Mission housing programme has previously aimed to provide affordable homes to homeless families across Kerala. This latest loan approval ensures continuity of the scheme and supports both ongoing constructions and targeted assistance to marginalized communities, reflecting the government?s commitment to social development.
