Synopsis

IHCL is investing up to INR 5 crore in the redevelopment of Chotelal Ki Ghat in Kolkata, a historic site along the Hooghly River built in the 1870s. Supported by INTACH, the project focuses on restoration, conservation, landscaping, and beautification, in line with the Namami Gange Programme and Swachhata initiatives. Executives from IHCL and Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port emphasized enhancing the ghat's cultural significance and community engagement. The collaboration is part of a larger effort to revive heritage sites through private-public partnerships, aiming to make Chotelal Ki Ghat a prominent cultural and tourist destination.

Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) has joined hands with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata, to redevelop Chotelal Ki Ghat, committing up to INR 5 crore for the project. Built in the 1870s on the Hooghly Riverfront, the ghat is being conserved with the support of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to preserve its historical and cultural significance.

The redevelopment aligns with the government's Namami Gange Programme and Swachhata initiatives, aiming to restore the ghat's original character while improving its functionality and visual appeal. Gaurav Pokhariyal, Executive Vice President Human Resources at IHCL, mentioned that the project is designed to enhance the community's connection with the river and strengthen the cultural heritage of West Bengal.

The project involves restoration, conservation, landscaping, and beautification of the Grade I Heritage site. Heritage conservation bodies will closely work with IHCL and the port authorities to ensure that all interventions respect the ghat?s historic integrity. Rathendra Raman, Chairman of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, highlighted that the collaboration with IHCL is a major step in heritage-led development, aiming not just to restore the ghat but also to make it a significant public and tourist destination.

This redevelopment builds on earlier efforts to conserve Kolkata's riverfronts and heritage sites, reflecting a wider move towards private-public collaborations for preserving cultural landmarks. The project is expected to create a sustainable model that balances conservation with community engagement, encouraging visitors and locals to appreciate the historical importance of Chotelal Ki Ghat.
