Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's Environmental Laboratory, certified under ISO 9001:2015, has introduced a new digital monitoring system for water quality testing. The 'e-System Water Sample Inspection Report and Monitoring System' (WQMS) was launched by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailash Shinde earlier this week. The laboratory already tests drinking water, wastewater, and private samples, and with this system the entire process from collection to reporting has become digital and transparent. The Commissioner also advised seeking NABL accreditation and expanding testing to cover food vendors. The system improves accuracy, tracking, and accessibility of water-quality data for both officials and citizens.

The Environmental Laboratory of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, responsible for testing air, water, and wastewater, has added a new digital system to strengthen its operations. The facility, which already holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, unveiled the 'e-System Water Sample Inspection Report and Monitoring System? (WQMS) during Independence Day celebrations. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailash Shinde inaugurated the system and also inspected the laboratory. He expressed satisfaction with the updated facility, noting that work was being carried out as per ISO standards. He instructed that efforts be made to obtain NABL accreditation to further raise the lab's quality. He also asked for testing of food-vendor samples and directed staff to carry out surprise visits to water tanks for sample collection.

The laboratory currently tests drinking water samples supplied across Navi Mumbai, as well as wastewater collected from sources such as lakes, creeks, drains, sewage treatment plants, ponds, wells, leachate treatment plants, and borewells. It also handles requests for testing from private organizations. Earlier, the laboratory was located under the Agroli bridge where dust frequently disrupted work. To address this, a modern laboratory was set up on the second floor of the multipurpose building at Belapurgaon, the old Belapur Divisional Office. The newly developed WQMS has now been integrated into this upgraded facility.

The WQMS system simplifies every step of the testing process from requisition of samples to testing, approval, and report generation under a single platform. For water supply, health, and distribution departments, the process has become more streamlined and organized. Every sample is recorded digitally, ensuring transparency and easier tracking of contaminated sources. Automatic notifications are generated for re-inspection when required, and digitally signed reports are made available to departments and citizens online.

One important feature is the immediate access to reports, which allows administrative officials to respond quickly to any irregularities in water quality. The dashboards and data collected through the system also help in identifying recurring issues, analyzing patterns, and using the information for better planning of water management. The website developed under this project informs citizens about the testing carried out by the Environment Department, highlights the role of water quality monitoring, and provides access to private test reports. It also supports the ongoing goal of gaining NABL certification and expanding testing for food safety.

With this initiative, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has taken a further step towards ensuring greater accuracy and transparency in water testing while also strengthening public trust in the monitoring process.
