Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), in collaboration with Project Mumbai, launched a large-scale plastic collection and recycling initiative during Independence Day celebrations. The drive, held under the theme 'Every Home - Plastic Free', received strong participation from schools, housing societies, and offices. A total of 141 kg of plastic was collected from 14 centers, which will be recycled into usable public items. The initiative also introduced a weekly plastic and e-waste collection program, aiming to build long-term habits of responsible disposal and reduce landfill waste in the city.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), along with Project Mumbai, has begun a new step towards reducing plastic waste in the city. The initiative was introduced as part of Independence Day activities under the campaign 'Tricolor at Home, Cleanliness at Home', which promoted the concept of 'Every Home - Plastic Free'. Citizens across housing societies, schools, colleges, offices, and institutions actively took part, marking strong public involvement in the effort.
The campaign was carried out under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailash Shinde and Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, who emphasized making Navi Mumbai a plastic-free city through community engagement. As part of the drive, a specially designed municipal vehicle collected 141 kilograms of plastic from 14 designated collection centers. Instead of being sent to the city's solid waste processing site, the plastic will be recycled into useful products that will be made available in public spaces.
Students gave a remarkable response to the program, reflecting early awareness of plastic waste reduction among the younger generation. According to civic officials, instilling such habits at a young age is a vital step for building a sustainable future and reducing the dependence on single-use plastic.
Building on the success of this campaign, NMMC and Project Mumbai have announced that a weekly plastic and e-waste collection drive will now be carried out across the city. The initiative, which began as a pilot project on Independence Day, is expected to serve as a foundation for achieving the long-term goal of 'Zero Plastic and E-waste Landfill' for Navi Mumbai.
Housing societies, schools, offices, and institutions interested in participating are required to register with Project Mumbai or the Solid Waste Management Department of NMMC. Citizens have also been encouraged to deposit clean and dry plastic waste at their nearest civic office every Thursday and Friday through sanitation officers or inspectors.
