Synopsis

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate a new highway project on Friday, featuring a 1.865-kilometer bridge over the Ganga river connecting Aunta (Mokama) and Simaria (Begusarai) in Bihar. The new structure, which was built parallel to the old and damaged Rajendra Setu, will provide crucial connectivity between north and south Bihar. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time and save heavy vehicles from a detour of up to 100 km. The bridge is a key component of the government's ongoing efforts to enhance road and riverine infrastructure in the state, boosting both economic activity and regional connectivity.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate a new highway project in Bihar on Friday, which includes a newly constructed bridge over the Ganga river. The 1.865-kilometer structure, officially known as the Ganga Bridge at Mokama, connects the towns of Aunta in Patna district with Simaria in Begusarai. The project, with an estimated cost of over INR 1,161 crore, is a critical piece of infrastructure aimed at resolving long-standing connectivity issues in the region.

The new bridge has been built parallel to the decades-old Rajendra Setu, a two-lane rail-cum-road bridge that was built in 1959. For years, the Rajendra Setu has been under repair, restricting the movement of heavy vehicles and causing significant traffic congestion. The new, modern bridge will alleviate this problem, offering a direct and uninterrupted route for commuters.

The opening of the new bridge will have a major impact on travel efficiency. Heavy vehicles, which were previously forced to take a lengthy detour of up to 100 kilometers to cross the Ganga river, will now have a direct route between the northern and southern regions of Bihar. This will particularly benefit trade and transport between major districts like Begusarai, Supaul, and Araria in the north and Patna, Nawada, and Lakhisarai in the south.

Beyond its economic benefits, the bridge will also improve connectivity to Simaria Dham, a revered pilgrimage site and the birthplace of the famous poet Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. The project is part of a series of large-scale infrastructure developments in Bihar, which aim to link the state's various regions and improve its overall connectivity to support economic growth and ease the lives of millions of people.
