Synopsis

The Western Railway has proposed demolishing and rebuilding the Field Marshal General Cariappa Road Over Bridge (ROB) in Borivali, in service since 1993 and nearing the end of its life. However, the BMC has asked for a three- to four-year delay, warning that removing the only flyover linking Borivali East and West would worsen traffic amid ongoing projects. The civic body has requested a structural audit and repairs to extend its lifespan. Existing congestion is already heightened by the delayed Kora Kendra Phase II flyover, stalled by slum clearance issues, and the Thane-Borivli twin tunnel project currently under construction in Borivali East.

The Field Marshal General Cariappa Road Over Bridge (ROB) in Borivali, which has been operational since it was commissioned in 1993, is now nearing the end of its useful life. For this reason, the Western Railway Authority has proposed its demolition and reconstruction. However, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged the Railways to delay the plan for three to four years, as the BMC is concerned that demolishing the only flyover connecting Borivali East and West would cause major traffic issues while other projects are already underway in the same area. In response, the BMC has requested a structural audit and repairs to extend the bridge's life.

A civic official stated that the ROB is the only flyover connecting Borivali East and West and sees a heavy flow of traffic. The official also noted that the ongoing construction of the Kora Kendra Phase II flyover and the Thane-Borivli twin tunnel project in Borivali East is already causing traffic congestion in the area. The Kora Kendra bridge extension has been delayed for over three years due to slum homes in the way, with only a small portion of homes cleared so far. This has contributed to the existing traffic problems.
