Synopsis

In a major city-wide anti-encroachment operation launched earlier this month, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation dismantled 187 unauthorised structures spanning approximately 3.35 lakh sq ft. The drive began by targeting under-construction sites to prevent proliferation of illegal buildings, later extending to kiosks and tin sheds. Officials issued 24-hour notices and indicated that negligent ward officials may face action. The operation remains ongoing, with authorities urging residents to remove unauthorised constructions voluntarily to avoid punitive measures.

Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation initiated an anti-encroachment operation targeting unauthorised constructions across the city. It removed a total of 187 illegal structures, covering roughly 3.35 lakh sq ft. The initial focus was on sites still under construction, aiming to halt the emergence of unauthorised buildings at source; the operation subsequently extended to include kiosks on footpaths and tin sheds.

The demolition included reinforced cement concrete (RCC) buildings, tin sheds, kiosks, and illegally added extra floors on permitted structures-where permission existed only for a single floor. The additional unauthorised levels were dismantled.

During a review meeting last month, the Municipal Commissioner cautioned that ward officials and beat inspectors could face disciplinary action if they failed to act promptly on illegal constructions. To enforce compliance, 24-hour notices have been mandated before proceedings commence. The anti-encroachment department further encouraged residents to dismantle unauthorised structures of their own accord to avoid punitive action.

By targeting both under-construction and standing unauthorised structures, and by instituting accountability for lax enforcement, authorities have conveyed a clear message. The continuation of this operation, combined with the call for voluntary compliance, shows a balanced approach-firm in enforcement yet offering a pathway to avoid penalties.
