The new Belasis Bridge is set to open to the public by December 31, 2025, ahead of its original deadline of April 2026. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that the reconstruction, a joint project with Western Railway, is now in its final stages. Once operational, the bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion and significantly improve connectivity between Nagpada and Tardeo, which were served by the old bridge.
The old Belasis Bridge, a 130-year-old British-era structure, was declared unsafe after a structural audit in 2018. It was demolished in June 2024 to make way for the new bridge. The new structure will be a modern, cable-stayed steel bridge with six vehicular lanes, doubling the capacity of the previous three-lane bridge. It is designed to accommodate the city's growing traffic demands and improve east-west connectivity.
The project is a collaborative effort between the Western Railway, which is handling the work within its jurisdiction, and the BMC, which is responsible for building the approach roads. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) has also partnered with the BMC and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to execute the project. The total estimated cost of the project is INR 110 crore, with the BMC contributing INR 70 crore and Western Railway contributing INR 40 crore.
Significant progress has been made in recent weeks. The Western Railway completed the installation of 12 main girders by August 10. The BMC has also completed all soil testing, foundation work, and pier construction, and has cleared all structures that were obstructing the work. The reconstruction is being carried out with a six-month advanced deadline, following directions from Additional Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, who is keen to accelerate the work. The new bridge is expected to provide much-needed relief to commuters in south Mumbai and is a key part of the city's ongoing infrastructure modernization program.
