After years of setbacks, the BSUP rehabilitation plan for Karimadom Colony has received the technical go-ahead, offering real relief to 105 long-waiting families. All essential details, designs, costs at INR 21 lakh per unit, and execution timelines are now finalized. Costford will lead construction, which is slated to commence soon on the cleared site and conclude within a year. What had become a symbol of civic dysfunction and election-driven policy shifts now stands at the cusp of tangible progress. Residents finally have a clear pathway to the homes they were promised long ago.
After nearly two decades of delay, the long-pending BSUP rehabilitation plan for Karimadom Colony has now received the much-needed technical approval. This move ushers in fresh hope for the 105 families still waiting for secure homes.
The local self-government department has cleared all design, cost, and construction concerns, paving the way for the project to advance. Architectural firm Costford, known for their Laurie Baker-inspired, sustainable designs, will take charge of building multi-storey units featuring terraces and balconies, blending affordability with dignity.
Residents have endured insufficient support: only INR 2,000 per month for rent in makeshift shelters lacking proper sanitation and electricity. Criticism grew louder when a ward councillor pointed out that the recent push appears politically timed, tied to upcoming local elections. Officials, however, cited missing and incomplete documentation from several beneficiaries as a key cause of the prolonged delay.
This effort revives a program first envisaged back in 2008 under the BSUP scheme, later linked with Kerala's Life Mission. From its inception, it has promised demolition of temporary dwellings in favour of permanent, dignified housing yet progress remained elusive until now.
If all goes according to plan, construction will kick off soon after the agreement is finalized. The cleared site is already ready, and with Costford onboard, the project is expected to wrap up within a year. Each housing unit is slated to cost INR 21 lakh.
In earlier phases extending back to 2014, the first few blocks were built under BSUP, along with essential facilities like a community centre and playground. Costford's design even won acclaim from HUDCO for its eco-friendly, cost-effective approach.
