IHG Hotels and Resorts, in partnership with Samhi Hotels, has intensified its expansion strategy in India's hospitality sector with the launch of a second Holiday Inn Express in Kolkata. Developed with an investment of INR 40 crore, this new 113-room property brings the total number of Holiday Inn Express hotels in India to 18.
Of these 18 properties, Samhi Hotels owns 12, underlining its significant alignment with the brand and its long-term plans for growth. The hotel will be managed by IHG, which continues to bolster its presence in India with 52 operational properties across six global brands-Six Senses, InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Staybridge Suites.
Sudeep Jain, Managing Director for South Asia at IHG Hotels and Resorts, noted that India, being the world's third-largest domestic travel market, held vast potential for expansion. He mentioned that the company foresaw the capacity for up to 20 Holiday Inn Express properties in Kolkata alone, including suburban areas, reflecting strong growth opportunities across all IHG brands.
He further added that IHG is actively looking to manage more hotels and remains focused on generating attractive returns for its capital partners. The group is especially interested in entering emerging destinations in West Bengal such as Siliguri, Durgapur, Santiniketan, Digha, and Darjeeling through management contracts.
Ashish Jakhanwala, Chairman and Managing Director of Samhi Hotels, commented that the newly launched Kolkata hotel is intended to be the first of many projects in the eastern region. He remarked that the investment also indicated rising enthusiasm among institutional investors regarding the hospitality sector in this part of the country. He also revealed that the company is already in talks for potential acquisitions of other properties in Kolkata.
Currently operating 32 hotels across India, Samhi sees Kolkata as a promising market, supported by historically steady performance. Meanwhile, Jain revealed that 84 additional IHG-affiliated hotels are under construction at various stages, pointing to a projected 2.5-fold growth even in the absence of new deal signings.
India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra) has projected that the country's hotel sector may see RevPAR (revenue per available room) stabilise by FY26 following robust gains in FY25.
