Synopsis

Goa's solar industry is set for a major leap, with projected growth in business turnover from INR 37 crore to INR 325 crore by 2027, backed by strong policy support and central subsidies. The Solar Power Association of Goa (SPAG) anticipates a sharp rise in solar capacity, consumer investments, and employment in the sector. Thanks to initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Scheme and Goa's own solar policy, the state expects its solar footprint to expand to 65 MW in the next two years, significantly contributing to the green energy momentum.

Goa's renewable energy sector is witnessing a rapid surge, as the solar industry prepares for a significant scale-up over the next two years. The Solar Power Association of Goa (SPAG) has projected that the sector will experience a nearly 8.8-fold jump in business turnover from INR 37 crore at present to INR 325 crore by 2027.

SPAG President Sandeep Naik, while addressing the media during the past week, remarked that the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar Scheme, along with the Goa State Solar Policy, are currently the most progressive solar initiatives in the country. He stated that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has placed green energy high on the government's agenda and has been actively encouraging citizens to take full advantage of central and state-led benefits.

According to SPAG, Goa has so far installed 12 MW of solar power, with an additional 2 MW nearing completion. By 2027, this installed capacity is projected to expand to 65 MW more than a fivefold increase. The consumer investment in solar infrastructure is expected to jump from INR 18 crore to INR 162 crore during the same period.

The growth isn't limited to installations and investments. The solar sector in Goa is also emerging as a key employment generator. Currently, about 45 entrepreneurs are engaged in the field; this number is expected to triple to 135 in two years. On the workforce front, direct employment is predicted to rise from 750 to 2,250 individuals, while indirect employment could see a leap from 1,875 to 6,750 people.

Government incentives have played a pivotal role in driving this momentum. The central government has so far released INR 13.5 crore in subsidies through the state machinery and an additional INR 5.37 crore directly to beneficiaries. Correspondingly, GST collections from the solar sector have reached INR 4.48 crore since the rollout of the PM scheme and are projected to grow to INR 39 crore by 2027.

This substantial fiscal and infrastructural expansion signals that Goa is not only chasing energy sustainability but is also building a resilient solar economy that benefits businesses, workers, and the environment.
