The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to demolish 625 homes in the Amar Nagar slum in Mulund to make way for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) tunnel, a key east-west connectivity project. Affected residents will be relocated to six new rehabilitation towers in Bhandup West, with 906 flats under construction at Runwal Forest. Each resettled family will receive a 300 sq ft apartment. So far, 350 residents have been confirmed eligible for relocation, with assessments ongoing. The GMLR includes a 4.7 km tunnel from Goregaon's Film City to Mulund, designed to ease traffic congestion across Mumbai. Relocation is expected by December 2025.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is moving ahead with plans to demolish approximately 625 dwellings located in the Amar Nagar slum in Mulund. These structures, situated adjacent to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), stand in the path of a proposed tunnel critical for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project.
Residents affected by this major infrastructure initiative are slated for relocation to Bhandup West, where six rehabilitation buildings are currently under construction as part of the resettlement effort.
The GMLR project is a vital undertaking designed to enhance east-west connectivity across Mumbai. It features a 4.7-kilometre tunnel that will stretch from Film City in Goregaon to Mulund, terminating near the Amar Nagar slum. This ambitious project aims to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve urban mobility.
A BMC official from the bridges department confirmed that the project-affected persons (PAPs) would receive apartments, each measuring around 300 square feet. A total of 906 flats are being constructed at Runwal Forest in Bhandup, specifically for this rehabilitation purpose. The official stated that the relocation was scheduled to be completed by December of this year.
Of the 625 hutments identified for demolition, the BMC has completed four out of seven Annexure II eligibility lists, which determine who qualifies for rehabilitation. So far, 350 slum dwellers have been deemed eligible for new homes. The remaining residents are expected to be assessed under the pending three annexure phases before their eligibility is declared.
The BMC's building construction department is actively working on the rehabilitation buildings, which have been designed as six wings, each rising to a ground-plus-23-storey configuration.
