Synopsis

The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has proposed an upgrade to a Grade 1 city corporation, a strategic move to unlock greater development opportunities and secure more central and state government grants. This proposal follows the abandonment of a "Greater Mysuru" plan due to insufficient population. The upgrade, which involves merging surrounding municipal councils and town panchayats, aims to boost tourism, trade, and job creation in Mysuru. This would position the city similarly to Hubballi-Dharwad, Karnataka's second-largest corporation, reflecting a push for accelerated urban growth and improved infrastructure in the region.

The Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has formally submitted a proposal to the state urban development department, seeking an upgrade to a Grade 1 city corporation. This initiative comes as part of a strategic push to enhance the city's development and secure increased financial support from both the Union and state governments.

The decision to pursue a Grade 1 upgrade follows the abandonment of an earlier "Greater Mysuru" plan. That previous proposal aimed for a much larger urban expansion but was ultimately deemed unfeasible due to the city's insufficient population to meet the stringent criteria for a "greater city corporation" as per Union government guidelines, which typically require a minimum population of 25 lakh (2.5 million). Even with the proposed mergers of surrounding municipal councils and town panchayats, Mysuru's population would not exceed 16 lakh (1.6 million).

The upgrade to a Grade 1 city corporation is intended to facilitate the planned growth of Mysuru, a city renowned for its cultural heritage and tourism. Such a reclassification is expected to unlock a significantly higher volume of grants, which would in turn support crucial development projects, boost tourism, stimulate local trade, and contribute to job creation within the city. This move would also place Mysuru in a similar administrative tier to the Hubballi-Dharwad City Corporation, which currently stands as the second-largest corporation in Karnataka after the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in Bengaluru.

The MCC submitted its proposal following direct instructions from Chief Minister Shri Siddaramaiah, indicating a strong political backing for the upgrade. Local representatives and various civic organizations have been actively advocating for this reclassification for several years, recognizing its potential to accelerate Mysuru's urban development. The tenure of the MCC's elected body concluded in November of last year, and there is now a pressing demand for urgent elections to be held for the newly formed civic body once the upgrade receives official approval.
