Synopsis

Urban local bodies across Uttar Pradesh have initiated a significant house tax recovery drive from July 15 to July 31 that aims to collect pending dues from over 55 lakh properties in 17 major cities. This intensive campaign targets an ambitious revenue of INR 1,862 crore, building on a robust 21% growth in consolidated revenue to INR 5,568 crore in the 2024-25 financial year. The initiative, crucial for funding civic services and urban development, also addresses property owners' grievances stemming from recent GIS-based tax revisions.

Urban local bodies across Uttar Pradesh have launched a comprehensive house tax recovery drive, which commenced on July 15 and is slated to continue until July 31. The initiative focuses on covering over 55 lakh properties situated within 17 key cities, with a revenue target of INR 1,862 crore.

Property tax serves as a vital revenue stream for urban local bodies, directly funding essential civic services such as sanitation, public health, and critical urban infrastructure development like roads, water supply, and street lighting.

The 17 municipal corporations primarily drive the revenue collection for Uttar Pradesh's total of 762 urban local bodies. While these major cities generate a significant portion of the revenue, an estimated 30 to 35 lakh additional properties are located in the state's 199 municipal councils and 545 town councils.

In the previous financial year, from April 1 to September 30, 2024, urban local bodies across Uttar Pradesh successfully collected INR 1,401 crore, marking a substantial 33% increase compared to the year prior. Building on this momentum, the current drive seeks to surpass this achievement with its INR 1,862 crore target.

Overall, through property tax and other levies, urban local bodies in Uttar Pradesh collectively generated INR 5,568 crore in consolidated revenue during the 2024-25 financial year, registering a notable growth of 21%. Simultaneously, concerns have arisen from property owners due to upward revisions in house tax values for lakhs of properties in 14 key cities, following Geographic Information System (GIS)-based assessments.

To address these concerns and facilitate a smoother recovery process, concerned zonal officials, executive officials, and tax assessors have been instructed to organize camps to resolve grievances from residents approaching them.
