Redevelopment has begun in Shanthipuram Colony, Kochi, where 197 families will receive new homes under the "Pocket Homes" model, replacing unsafe dwellings. Each compact cluster will house eight units on 0.75-cent plots, with homes costing INR 10 lakh each. The Kerala government is contributing INR 4 lakh per unit via the LIFE Mission scheme, while Kochi Corporation secured CSR funds from BPCL (INR 1 crore) and Sobha Group (INR 50 lakh) to cover the rest. Beneficiaries will receive registered land titles. Phase I includes 16 homes, supported technically by Azadi Group's engineering college. Earlier upgrades to roads and drainage have laid the foundation for this community transformation.
Construction work has officially begun on a redevelopment project in Shanthipuram Colony, located in the 44th division of Kochi Municipal Corporation, aimed at replacing unsafe and aging homes with apartment-style housing units. Under the initiative, 197 beneficiary families will receive new homes built using the "Pocket Homes" model. These homes are being constructed in compact clusters of eight residential units per block on 0.75-cent plots allotted to each family.
Each unit is estimated to cost around INR 10 lakh. Out of this, INR 4 lakh per unit is being provided by the Kerala state government under its flagship LIFE (Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment) Mission scheme. To bridge the remaining financial gap, Kochi Corporation has mobilized corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. BPCL Kochi Refinery has extended financial assistance worth INR 1 crore, while Sobha Group has contributed INR 50 lakh. Each beneficiary will receive a registered title deed for their land, ensuring long-term security and formal ownership.
The redevelopment project is being executed with technical support from the Architecture Engineering College run by the Azadi Group, a firm that has been active in community-focused infrastructure development in Kerala. Phase I of the project includes construction of 16 homes, marking a significant milestone in Kochi Corporation's push to revitalize vulnerable housing clusters within the city.
In addition to new housing, the Shanthipuram area has benefited from earlier infrastructure works including the construction of proper drainage lines and roadways, which were funded under local development projects and ward-level schemes. These improvements have created the necessary groundwork for successful redevelopment. The colony, which had been classified under Kochi's list of unsafe dwellings, is now poised for transformation into a safe and inclusive neighborhood.
