STL (Sterlite Technologies Ltd.), a global leader in optical and digital solutions, has achieved a significant milestone in sustainable manufacturing by collaborating with Hygenco to establish Maharashtra's first green hydrogen and green oxygen production facility for optical fibre. Located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, this pioneering project will supply green hydrogen and oxygen to STL's glass preform manufacturing unit. The initiative positions STL as one of the world's first optical fibre manufacturers to fully deploy green hydrogen in its production processes, marking a crucial step towards its ambitious Net Zero by 2030 goal and contributing to India's broader decarbonization efforts.
STL (Sterlite Technologies Ltd.), a global leader in optical and digital solutions, has achieved a significant stride in sustainable manufacturing. The company has collaborated with Hygenco to establish Maharashtra's first dedicated facility for producing green hydrogen and green oxygen, specifically for optical fibre manufacturing. This pioneering green hydrogen project, centered in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, will supply essential green hydrogen and oxygen to STL's glass preform facility.
This new green hydrogen facility is set to enable STL to become one of the world's very first optical fibre manufacturers to utilize 100 percent green hydrogen in its production processes. This move directly supports STL's ambitious goal to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2030, a target that includes becoming carbon neutral in manufacturing facilities and ensuring 100 percent of its plants are 'Zero Waste to Landfill' certified by that year. Hygenco will build, own, and operate this facility, guaranteeing a reliable and commercially viable supply for a period of 20 years.
Rahul Puri, CEO of Optical Networking Business at STL, stated that by fully leveraging green hydrogen for its glass preform manufacturing, STL was establishing a new global benchmark for decarbonization within the optical fibre industry. He added that their collaboration with Hygenco exemplified STL's commitment to sustainability and operational excellence, expressing pride in leading the integration of green hydrogen into large-scale manufacturing and looking forward to continuing efforts for a greener, more resilient future globally.
Amit Bansal, CEO of Hygenco Green Energies Pvt. Ltd., remarked that green hydrogen held the potential to be a transformative force in India's pursuit of sustainability. He described their long-term engagement with STL as a bold move towards decarbonizing industrial processes, expressing pride in enabling STL to usher the global optical fibre industry into a new era of green manufacturing. Hygenco, headquartered in Gurgaon, is aggressively investing in green hydrogen and ammonia projects across India, with a target to deploy 10 GW of such assets by 2030, aiming to invest USD 2.5 billion over the next three years. This project in Maharashtra marks Hygenco's third operational green hydrogen plant, following successful commissions in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, and Hisar, Haryana.
Hydrogen and oxygen play a vital role in the optical fibre manufacturing process, serving as fuel in blast furnaces to convert silica particles into glass. Hydrogen is particularly crucial as a reducing agent, removing impurities and enhancing the transparency and structural integrity of the fiber, which leads to lower attenuation losses and higher data transfer speeds. Through this strategic collaboration, STL anticipates reducing its carbon emissions by approximately 30 percent annually. The plant now incorporates advanced autonomous energy management systems, real-time monitoring, and automated control technologies, all designed to enhance safety and operational efficiency. This initiative aligns strongly with India's broader commitment to building 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2070.
STL is a leading global optical and digital solutions company, providing advanced offerings crucial for building 5G, Rural, Fibre-to-the-x (FTTx), Enterprise, and Data Centre networks worldwide. The company is specialized in optical networking which consists of optical fiber and cables, hyper-scale network design, and deployment and network software.
