Two unsafe buildings in Margao, Goa, 'Cabecca de Calconde' and Indira Apartments, are set for demolition after delays. The 'Cabecca de Calconde' building, deemed beyond repair in 2018, has seen its demolition pending over 1.5 years despite a November 2023 collector's order. Recent parapet collapses prompted swift action and a May 27 order for immediate demolition. The PWD has shortlisted agencies, but the demolition depends on the Margao Municipal Council's ability to vacate the remaining occupants.
Authorities in Margao, Goa, are set to demolish two buildings that have been deemed unsafe. This action, impacting properties in Margao, Goa, follows significant delays and legal challenges. The demolitions aim to address public safety concerns posed by dilapidated structures.
The two unsafe buildings are the 'Cabecca de Calconde' building and Indira Apartments, both located at Khareband. The 'Cabecca de Calconde' building was declared unsafe in 2018 by the Goa College of Engineering's civil engineering department, which found it beyond repair due to weak concrete, corroded rebars, spalling concrete, and hanging GI sheets. The demolition of the 'Cabecca de Calconde' building has been pending for over a year and a half, despite a district collector's order issued in November 2023.
The delay in demolishing unsafe buildings was linked to the inaction of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chief officer, prompting a concerned party to approach the High Court. Action accelerated two months ago following two parapet collapses in Margao, which underlined the dangers to public safety.
On May 27, South Goa collector Egna Cleetus issued an order for immediate demolition. The Public Works Department (PWD) building division has since identified agencies for this work. However, the demolition depends on the MMC successfully getting the remaining occupants to vacate.
According to multiple reports, in Indira Apartments, 23 of 26 families have already moved out, but three families remain. For 'Cabecca de Calconde,' only one person is still present, and its demolition is currently facing a legal challenge in the High Court.
