Mumbai Police have recently filed a First Information Report (FIR) against a real estate developer. This action, near the Powai helipad in Mumbai, Maharashtra, concerns alleged unauthorized excavation and resulting soil erosion. The FIR was registered after the developer reportedly continued work despite notices from the civic body.
The FIR has been filed against Hiranandani Builders & Developers. The alleged unauthorized excavation is described as 300 meters long, 4-5 meters wide, and 1-2 meters deep. This work was carried out in a hilly area and reportedly led to soil erosion.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a notice to the developer on July 7, 2025, regarding the illegal excavation. A stop-work notice had previously been issued on July 5. Despite these notices, the excavation work reportedly continued on July 8. This prompted the BMC to approach the Powai police to register the FIR.
The case was registered under sections 52 and 43 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. Santosh More, a security officer for Hiranandani Builders & Developers, was present during a site inspection.
Unauthorized excavation and construction activities, particularly in hilly or environmentally sensitive areas, can lead to soil erosion and instability. Legal actions by civic bodies and police aim to enforce urban planning regulations and environmental protection norms.
