Synopsis

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu visited flood-affected areas in Mandi district, assuring support and assessing damage. He urged MPs to help secure Union Government permission to rehabilitate families on forest land, as 68% of the state is forest area. The state plans to provide INR 7 lakh compensation for rebuilding homes. Over 1,184 houses, 710 cowsheds, and 201 shops were affected, with 15 fatalities. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with relief camps and road restoration prioritized.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu recently visited regions severely impacted by recent flooding. During his visit to the Seraj Assembly constituency of Mandi district, he aimed to assess the damage, assure support, and address rehabilitation needs for affected families by inspecting relief camps and interacting with residents.

Residents told the Chief Minister that their homes had suffered severe damage due to torrential rains and cloudbursts, leaving houses either completely destroyed or unsafe. They requested the state government to rehabilitate them quickly.

Chief Minister Sukhu assured all affected individuals that the state government stands firmly with them and will ensure their rehabilitation. He stated that land would be provided by the state to individuals who lost their properties, wherever it is possible. However, allocating forest land requires approval from the Union Government, as 68% of Himachal Pradesh is forest land.

The state government will forward a proposal to the Centre for this necessary clearance. He urged all BJP MPs in Himachal Pradesh to assist in getting permission from the Union Government to rehabilitate disaster-affected people on forest land, stating that special exemptions from the Centre could enable this.

The Chief Minister stated that while no compensation can fully make up for the loss of life, the government will provide relief for the damage caused to homes, shops, cowsheds, cattle, and goats. He promised INR 7 lakh for rebuilding homes. The state government, he added, would compensate for all losses using its own resources. So far, 15 fatalities have been reported, while 27 individuals remain missing. Rescue efforts have successfully saved 290 people in Mandi district. The calamity has affected 1,184 houses, 710 cowsheds, and 201 shops. Additionally, 780 livestock have perished.

Relief and rescue operations are ongoing in the Seraj assembly constituency. Reopening and restoring blocked roads in the Seraj area is a top priority, with around 50 JCB machines and other heavy machinery from the Public Works Department (PWD) engaged in road clearance.

CM Sukhu stated that until roads are reopened, delivering relief materials remains a challenge. He personally delivered relief material and ration to rain-hit Galu by helicopter. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh also visited affected areas to assess the damage.

The government has established relief camps to support affected families. At present, 17 such camps are providing shelter to 677 displaced individuals. Aid distributed includes over 3,000 ration kits and 4,000 tarpaulins. Financial assistance is also being provided to families. Additionally, 177 police personnel have been deployed in the affected subdivisions of Thunag, Karsog, and Gohar to assist in relief efforts.

The Chief Minister also criticized those spreading misinformation on social media and politicizing the disaster, stating it was not a time for politics. He confirmed being in regular contact with the Leader of the Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, regarding the situation. He mentioned that two Indian Air Force helicopters were provided for relief and rescue operations at the state's request, which Jai Ram Thakur also utilized. Rehabilitating affected families is a key priority for the state government. CM Sukhu visited Bagsiad, Thunag, Thunadi, Lambathach, Jarol, Pandavshila, Kuthah, and Janjheli areas, interacting with the disaster-affected residents
