Synopsis

Namibia has joined the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA). The announcement was made on Wednesday, July 9, during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's visit to Namibia. CDRI, established in 2019 by India, promotes resilient infrastructure against climate risks. GBA, launched by PM Modi in September 2023, aims to advance biofuels globally. These memberships enhance cooperation in capacity building and reflect efforts to strengthen multilateralism for the Global South, boosting bilateral ties.

Namibia on Wednesday, July 9, became a member of two international initiatives focused on global sustainability and development. This occurred during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's visit to Windhoek, Namibia.

The decision aims to enhance cooperation in areas of infrastructure resilience and cleaner energy, with Namibia formally joining the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the Global Biofuels Alliance as stated by Dammu Ravi, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (Economic Relations), during a special briefing.

The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) was established in 2019 under the leadership of the Government of India, with support from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). It functions as a multi-stakeholder global partnership involving national governments, UN agencies, multilateral development banks, the private sector, and academic institutions.

Its aim is to promote the resilience of infrastructure systems to climate and disaster risks, thereby ensuring sustainable development. It also seeks to expand the development and retrofit of resilient infrastructure to respond to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) imperatives of universal access to basic services, enabling prosperity, and decent work.

The Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) was launched by Prime Minister Shri Modi, along with leaders from the US, Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Singapore, Bangladesh, Mauritius, and the UAE, on September 9, 2023, during the G20 Summit in New Delhi. The GBA has increased its global presence by being represented at international forums such as COP28 in Dubai, the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, India Energy Week 2024, and the World Biogas Summit 2024 in the UK. It was also invited as an International Organisation to the Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) meeting under Brazil's G20 presidency and the International Forum on Sustainable Biofuels under the Italian G7 Presidency.

Ravi highlighted that India and Namibia discussed expanding their cooperation in capacity building, with several agreements and announcements made during Prime Minister Modi's visit. These included a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for setting up an entrepreneurship center in Namibia, cooperation in the health sector, and the implementation of UPI (Unified Payment Interface) in Namibia. Ravi added that these developments are significant for bilateral cooperation and are expected to further boost the relationship.

The MEA stated there was a clear understanding by both leaders that strengthening multilateralism for South-South cooperation and finding solutions to challenges faced by Global South countries is important, and that India and Namibia can partner in this area.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his five-nation tour and departed for New Delhi on Wednesday, July 9. The week-long diplomatic journey, which began on July 2, took him to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and finally Namibia.
