Synopsis

Mumbai's Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has launched a month-long campaign to regularize ownership in stalled slum redevelopment projects. This initiative, part of a Maharashtra government amnesty scheme, aims to update Annexure-2 lists with buyers' names for eligibility. The drive addresses delays and legal disputes from unregistered ownership transfers. Ten camps have been set up for residents to submit documents. Buyers of slum buildings before January 1, 2011, are eligible. The campaign seeks to expedite projects and prevent future controversies.

The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has recently started a month-long campaign to formalize property ownership. This initiative in Mumbai, Maharashtra, aims to address delays and legal disputes in stalled slum redevelopment projects by encouraging residents to register their ownership transfers.

The issue of unregistered ownership transfers has led to delays and legal disputes in these projects. Many original allottees, discouraged by prolonged waits, sold their buildings. However, existing policy did not automatically add the buyer's name to Annexure-2, the government's list of eligible beneficiaries for homes in redeveloped buildings. This situation resulted in conflicts, interference during eviction, and court proceedings, which hindered the redevelopment process. This drive is part of an amnesty scheme introduced by the Maharashtra government in October 2024. The scheme was later extended due to low participation.

Buyers who purchased slum buildings before January 1, 2011, in halted redevelopment schemes are eligible for benefits under this scheme. The campaign aims to verify these buyers and update their names in Annexure-2 to ensure projects can proceed without further controversies. To make it easier for residents, the SRA has set up ten camps where they can submit documents without needing to visit the SRA office.

Various government agencies, including MHADA, MMRDA, CIDCO, MSRDC, and BMC, are mandated by the SRA to implement these schemes. The SRA urges all slum residents to participate in this drive to prevent further delays in redevelopment. Slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai are important for urban renewal and providing better housing to residents.
