The Sindoor flyover in South Mumbai, earlier known as the Carnac bridge, is set to open to the public following its scheduled inauguration by Maharashtra Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis. Developed by the BMC, the bridge spans 328 metres and facilitates two-way traffic between East and West South Mumbai near Masjid Bunder. Constructed within a strict timeline after the dismantling of the old Carnac bridge in August 2022 due to safety concerns, the new flyover integrates complex civil engineering features, including dual 550-metric-ton steel girders and RCC piers, and has secured all required safety and structural approvals.

The new flyover, developed under the supervision of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar and executed by the BMC's Bridge Department, extends 328 metres in length, of which 70 metres fall within railway limits. The structure incorporates two massive 550-metric-ton steel girders-each 70 metres long, 26.5 metres wide, and 10.8 metres high-mounted on RCC piers. These girders were launched during special blocks provided by Central Railway in October 2024 and January 2025, marking a technically demanding phase of the project involving precise alignment above active railway tracks.
Designed to accommodate two-way vehicular movement, the flyover is expected to ease congestion in densely trafficked zones around Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Masjid Bunder, and Mohammad Ali Road. The bridge also connects to P. D'Mello Road and lies close to Masjid Bunder railway station, significantly enhancing east-west mobility in the area.
All essential construction tasks, including the RCC deck slab, asphalting, anti-crash barriers, approach roads, road markings, and protective painting, have been completed. The eastern section, including its foundation and asphalt work, was finalised within a span of four months. A load test has already confirmed the structure's capacity, stability, and safety.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation confirmed receipt of the necessary Structural Stability Certificate, Safety Certificate, and a No Objection Certificate from the Railway authorities, signalling that the bridge is ready for public use. Key state dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Eknath Shinde and Shri Ajit Pawar, Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, and various ministers and MPs, are expected to attend the inaugural ceremony.
The flyover's reconstruction was carried out using a design approved by Central Railway, ensuring compliance with inter-agency technical standards. The project demonstrates coordinated efforts between the BMC and Indian Railways and stands as a model of urban infrastructure modernisation in Mumbai.
Beyond merely restoring an old route, the flyover enhances connectivity and safety for thousands of daily commuters across South Mumbai. Its timely delivery despite technical complexities reflects both administrative resolve and engineering precision. The project sets a precedent for future bridge reconstructions in densely populated city areas where operational railways and urban congestion pose constant challenges.
