Synopsis

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has inaugurated the world's first steel slag road at a port, located at Hazira Port, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The 1.1-kilometer road uses processed steel slag aggregates, a by-product of steel manufacturing. This project, India's third steel slag road but first in a port globally, demonstrates repurposing industrial waste into durable infrastructure. Developed in collaboration with CSIR-CRRI and the Ministry of Science & Technology, it aligns with the 'Waste to Wealth' mission, positioning APSEZ at the forefront of sustainable maritime infrastructure.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd. (APSEZ) has recently inaugurated a new road made from a unique material within its Hazira Port, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This marks a step in green infrastructure and circular economy development, utilizing processed steel slag aggregates in its construction.

The road spans 1.1 kilometers and connects the Multi-Purpose Berth (MPB-1) to the coal yard within Hazira Port. It uses processed steel slag aggregates, a by-product of steel manufacturing, demonstrating how industrial waste can be repurposed into high-performance, durable infrastructure.

The project was developed as part of Phase-II of the Bulk & General Cargo Terminal (BGCT) expansion. It involved collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research - Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) and the Union Ministry of Science & Technology. The road's flexible pavement design, created by CSIR-CRRI, improves its load-bearing capacity and longevity while reducing construction costs and environmental impact. This is India's third steel slag road, but it is the first ever constructed inside a port globally, placing India and APSEZ at the forefront of sustainable maritime infrastructure.

This project is aligned with the 'Waste to Wealth' mission. The road was formally inaugurated at Hazira Port by Dr. Vijay Kumar Saraswat, Member (Science & Technology), NITI Aayog. Several other dignitaries and scientists also attended the event. These included Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director-General of CSIR & Secretary of DSIR; Dr. Manoranjan Parida, Director of CSIR-CRRI & President of the Indian Roads Congress; Satish Pandey, who is the Senior Principal Scientist and inventor of the steel slag road technology; and Anand Marathe, COO of Adani Hazira Port Ltd.

Adani officials stated that with this initiative, APSEZ continues to lead the transformation of India's logistics sector, combining innovation, industrial ecology, and infrastructure resilience in service of national growth. Reusing industrial waste materials like steel slag for infrastructure construction offers environmental benefits by reducing landfill burden and conserving natural resources.
