Synopsis

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is progressing rapidly, with key construction milestones achieved across Maharashtra. Work is underway on three elevated stations-Thane, Virar, and Boisar-with initial slabs cast at Virar and Boisar. Viaduct construction has begun in Palghar, alongside excavation of seven mountain tunnels and a 21 km underground and undersea tunnel between BKC and Shilphata. This includes a 7 km undersea stretch beneath Thane Creek. Significant tunneling has been achieved using TBMs and NATM methods. Vertical shaft works and segment casting for tunnel linings are in full swing. Bridge construction has also started over major rivers, and 80% excavation at BKC station is complete.

The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has reported rapid progress on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed bullet train project. On Saturday, July 5, the project moved forward towards its completion targets by achieving significant structural and tunneling milestones across various construction sites in Maharashtra.

Work on all three elevated stations in the state - Thane, Virar, and Boisar - is advancing. The first slabs for Virar and Boisar stations have recently been cast. Across the alignment, pier foundations and pier works are underway at various locations, with approximately 44 kilometers of piers cast to date. Viaduct construction has also begun in the Palghar district, using full-span box girder launching technology, starting from the Dahanu area.

Excavation of seven mountain tunnels in the Palghar district is actively in progress, demonstrating the project's engineering scale. An important component is the 21-kilometer-long underground and undersea tunnel connecting the Mumbai Bullet Train station at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Shilphata. Of this tunnel, 16 kilometers are being excavated using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), while the remaining 5 kilometers are being executed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM).

This section includes a 7-kilometer undersea stretch beneath Thane Creek. So far, approximately 4.1 kilometers of tunnel heading have been achieved through the NATM from the Shilphata site, and two concurrent faces have been developed from the ADIT portal, marking continuous progress. Supporting this vast underground network, vertical construction is also moving ahead. Base slab casting has been completed at the Vikhroli shaft, which is 56 meters deep, and at the Sawli shaft, measuring 39 meters deep.

Sludge treatment plants are being installed at these shaft locations, and the Mahape tunnel lining casting yard is actively producing segments for the tunnel's inner lining. Additionally, bridge construction has commenced at three major rivers - Vaitarna, Ulhas, and Jagani - further contributing to the corridor's critical infrastructure. For the under-construction Mumbai Bullet Train station at Bandra-Kurla Complex, 80% of the excavation work is now complete, and base slab casting has begun at both ends of the station site, 100 feet below ground level.
