Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently demolished two unauthorised properties in Bonkode village, Koparkhairane, under orders from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. The action, led by senior officials and executed by the encroachment team, targeted homes belonging to Nishant and Sushant Naik, both cited under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act. After failing to comply with earlier notices, the owners were fined INR 20,000 each. A full demolition squad used hammers, cutters, and municipal support staff to dismantle the structures. NMMC confirmed more such operations will follow to enforce urban planning norms and deter illegal construction.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recently carried out a demolition operation in Koparkhairane under directives from Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. The action was spearheaded by Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad, with the on-ground implementation handled by the encroachment department.
The operation was initiated against two properties in Bonkode village, Koparkhairane, belonging to Mr Nishant Suresh Naik (Unit No. 002, House No. 1337) and Mr Sushant Subhash Naik (Unit No. 004, House No. 1337). Civic authorities had issued demolition notices to both individuals earlier this year, citing violations under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966. However, the property owners reportedly failed to respond, which led to the recent enforcement action.
Each violator was charged a penalty of INR 20,000, amounting to a total collection of INR 40,000 by the corporation in the form of cheques.
To execute the demolition, NMMC organised a full-fledged operation involving Assistant Commissioner of Koparkhairane, Mr Bharat U. Dhande, Junior Engineer Mr Chandrakant Dhotre, other municipal staff, and NMMC's police force. The task force deployed six labourers, two electronic hammers, one pickup van, and a gas cutter to remove the illegal structures effectively.
The civic body confirmed that such anti-encroachment measures would continue more aggressively in future to maintain planned urban development and curb unlawful construction activities across its jurisdiction.
With clear backing from senior civic officials and a well-equipped team, the municipality seems determined to maintain regulatory order. This action sends a stern message to offenders citywide that legal violations will not be overlooked, and repeat defaulters can expect stricter consequences in future campaigns.
