Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has intensified its cleanliness drive by combining mechanised deep-cleaning of roads with large-scale public awareness initiatives. Over the past 20 days, civic teams have cleaned major roads, industrial zones and high-traffic areas using mechanical sweepers and treated water to reduce dust and air pollution. Alongside this, the civic body has rolled out community-led campaigns involving students and volunteers to promote waste segregation, curb plastic use and encourage responsible disposal practices. Cleanliness pledges, door-to-door outreach and on-ground demonstrations of wet waste composting are key elements of the programme. The integrated approach aims to improve environmental quality while building long-term civic participation across Navi Mumbai.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has stepped up its cleanliness initiatives by combining mechanised deep-cleaning operations with extensive public outreach programmes aimed at improving waste management practices and reducing environmental pollution. The intensified drives form part of a broader effort to address rising dust levels in the air while promoting responsible civic behaviour among residents.

Over the past 20 days, civic teams have carried out systematic deep-cleaning of major arterial roads, internal link roads and industrial corridors, including MIDC areas. The operations involve collecting accumulated soil and dust using mechanical brushes, followed by washing road surfaces with treated water to minimise airborne particulate matter.

As part of the ongoing programme, deep-cleaning activities were carried out along the busy stretch from Sector 8 L Market to Manak Hospital in Nerul, as well as across sectors 11 to 15 in the surrounding area. Similar drives were undertaken in Turbhe's Sector 10 near the Sanpada D-Mart zone and in Sector 15 of Belapur, where road networks experience high daily traffic movement.

Parallel to infrastructure-focused cleaning, community-based initiatives have been rolled out to reinforce public participation. In the Airoli division, a special cleanliness drive was organised along the creekside belt between sectors 10 and 14, with participation from NSS students of Sushiladevi Deshmukh College. The drive commenced with a cleanliness pledge near the Mumbai Katai bridge and resulted in the collection of 28 bags of waste, which were immediately transported to the solid waste processing facility.

Public awareness efforts were also extended to large gatherings, including a religious event in Juinagar, where sanitation officers and inspectors interacted with attendees to explain the importance of waste segregation. Citizens were informed about the environmental impact of plastic usage and encouraged to avoid plastic bags and single-use plastic products.

In Airoli Sector 14, student volunteers from Pravin Gandhi College of Law have been conducting door-to-door awareness campaigns in residential societies over the past week, focusing on waste segregation and plastic prohibition. Residents were also briefed on the operation of a specialised vehicle that converts wet waste into compost, with appeals made for active participation in the initiative. Certificates were subsequently awarded to the volunteers in recognition of their contribution.

The civic body stated that these initiatives are being carried out under the direction of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, with guidance from Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar and oversight from the solid waste management department, ensuring that cleanliness enforcement and citizen engagement progress in parallel across the city.
