Synopsis

Maharashtra has secured approval for road works worth INR 1.50 lakh crore, marking a major step in the state’s infrastructure development. Projects include a new Pune Sambhajinagar expressway, elevated corridors around Pune, and a parallel expressway to the existing Pune Mumbai route. Work is set to start within the next three months, with completion targeted by 2026. These initiatives aim to improve connectivity, reduce travel times, and enhance transport efficiency across key urban and regional corridors, particularly benefiting the Pune and Mumbai regions.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed that road projects valued at INR 1.50 lakh crore for Maharashtra have received approval and are scheduled to begin within the next three months. He shared this while attending the centenary celebration of the Vidhan Parishad at the Vidhan Bhavan, during the state legislature session.

The Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC) will lead the construction of a new Pune Sambhajinagar expressway, with an estimated cost of INR 16,318 crore. This expressway is expected to reduce travel time from Pune to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to about two hours, and from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to Nagpur to approximately two-and-a-half hours. An MoU for the project has already been processed.

Gadkari also highlighted the Talegaon Chakan Shikrapur elevated road project, estimated at INR 4,207 crore, which will have its ground-breaking after the local body elections. The detailed project report for the Hadapsar Yavat elevated road is underway, with construction set to begin post-elections.

For the Pune region alone, road works worth INR 50,000 crore have been approved. This includes a parallel expressway to the existing Pune Mumbai route, costing around INR 15,000 crore. The expressway is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune to about one-and-a-half hours, while the Mumbai Pune Bengaluru route could see travel times shortened to roughly five-and-a-half hours.

These projects are part of a broader effort to enhance connectivity across Maharashtra, focusing on both urban corridors and regional links. Earlier this year, similar infrastructure commitments were made to ease traffic congestion near Mumbai and strengthen highway networks across the state. By investing in expressways and elevated roads, the state aims to support economic activity, improve mobility, and create more efficient routes for logistics and daily commuters.
