Amazon confirmed earlier this week that it would invest about USD 15 billion in Northern Indiana to develop large-scale data centre campuses, aiming to enhance its cloud computing capacity amid accelerating demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure. The initiative, which follows an earlier USD 11 billion commitment in the past year, is expected to add 2.4 gigawatts of capacity and generate around 1,100 jobs. Amazon has already invested more than USD 31.3 billion in Indiana since 2010. The company also revealed separate plans to spend up to USD 50 billion to expand AI and supercomputing capabilities for U.S. government clients.
Amazon recently announced that it intends to invest about USD 15 billion in Northern Indiana to establish new data centre campuses, a move designed to expand its cloud computing capability in response to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence usage. This project builds on the USD 11 billion investment the company announced in the past year and is set to add 2.4 gigawatts of capacity in the region, alongside creating nearly 1,100 jobs.
The company, which continues to lead the global cloud services market, has already invested more than USD 31.3 billion in Indiana since 2010, reflecting its long-term expansion strategy in the state. The development aligns with a broader industry shift, with technology majors such as Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta collectively committing billions towards AI infrastructure, despite relatively slow returns on such capital-heavy investments.
Earlier this week, Amazon also revealed plans to invest up to USD 50 billion to scale AI and supercomputing capabilities for U.S. government customers through Amazon Web Services. The company did not clarify whether this new initiative overlaps with the Indiana expansion.
For the Indiana project, Amazon has finalised an agreement with NIPSCO, one of the state's major natural gas and electricity providers. Under the terms of the arrangement, Amazon will pay fees for using existing power infrastructure and will also cover the cost of any additional power required for the new facilities. The company emphasised that this structure ensures local residents and businesses will not face any additional charges linked to the project.
