Synopsis

The PMRDA has approved an INR 156 crore plan to upgrade key roads in Khed taluka, particularly around the busy Chakan industrial area. The project includes widening and resurfacing seven PMRDA roads and five Major District Roads, expanding widths from 3.75 m to between 5.5 m and 10 m, with work targeted for completion in one year. To enable this, over 428 encroachments have been cleared, including 347 buildings. The initiative forms part of a larger INR 558.12 crore road development programme covering more than 40 km in and around Chakan. PMRDA has also begun land surveys for the proposed Chakan bypass, which will help divert heavy vehicles and ease local congestion.

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has cleared an INR 156 crore plan aimed at improving road conditions in Khed taluka, especially around the busy Chakan industrial area. The project includes widening and resurfacing seven PMRDA roads and five Major District Roads. These stretches, which currently measure around 3.75 m, will be expanded to widths ranging from 5.5 m to 10 m. PMRDA will use both concrete and asphalt depending on the specific road requirements, and the work is targeted for completion within a year.

The executive committee has already provided administrative and financial approvals, and the authority has permission to issue work orders even during the model code of conduct. PMRDA officials clarified that these road sections fall outside the areas affected by the election code, ensuring that construction schedules are not delayed.

To support the widening work, PMRDA has intensified its encroachment removal measures. More than 428 unauthorised structures, including 347 buildings, have been demolished in the Chakan area. In a recent drive on the Chakan-Talegaon stretch, over 40 illegal constructions were removed. Officials stated that clearing these encroachments is necessary because many stretches are too narrow for safe movement of industrial and local traffic.

Alongside the INR 156 crore upgrade, PMRDA is also rolling out a broader INR 558.12 crore road development programme, covering over 40 km in Chakan and nearby areas. Six stretches covering about 17.69 km have received technical approval from the state's chief minister, who chairs PMRDA. Tenders have also been floated for important links such as the Kuruli Phata-Nighoje and Chikhali-Moi roads, which are expected to ease pressure around the heavily used Chakan junction.

PMRDA has also begun land measurements for the proposed Chakan bypass. The bypass is planned to link the Chakan-Shikrapur and Chakan-Talegaon roads directly to the Pune-Nashik highway. This link is expected to divert heavy industrial vehicles away from residential and commercial areas, making daily movement easier for both local communities and transport operators.
