Synopsis

South Central Railway (SCR) is working on a long-term plan to expand Hyderabad's rail network by building three major terminals at Nagalapalli, Jukal and Dabilpur. These terminals are linked to the Regional Ring Rail (RRR) project, estimated at INR 26,000 crore and planned to run around 392-420 km while connecting several surrounding districts. The upcoming facilities are intended to ease pressure on busy stations like Secunderabad, Kacheguda and Hyderabad. They will also support future passenger growth, long-distance travel and expanded MMTS services in the region.

South Central Railway (SCR) is progressing with a long-term expansion plan that includes developing three major railway terminals around Hyderabad-at Nagalapalli, Jukal and Dabilpur. These projects are meant to support increasing passenger movement and future capacity needs for the next 50 years, according to senior officials.

The Nagalapalli terminal, coming up between Lingampalli and Vikarabad near the Outer Ring Road, is planned with 20 platform lines, 14 pit lines and 24 stabling lines. Once operational, it is expected to be the third-largest terminal in the country after Howrah and Sealdah. This terminal will mainly support trains bound for Maharashtra and Karnataka, including routes to Mumbai, Pune, Bidar, Hubballi and Belagavi.

The Jukal terminal, proposed near Umdanagar on the southern side of the city, is being planned with 18 platforms, 12 pit lines and 20 stabling lines. Its design capacity places it among the five biggest terminals in India. The Dabilpur terminal, located near Manoharabad in the northern region, will be spread across roughly 250 acres and is expected to cater to trains heading towards Nizamabad, Nanded and Shirdi.

These terminals are key components of the larger Regional Ring Rail (RRR) project, which has an estimated cost of INR 26,000 crore. The planned rail ring will run for approximately 392-420 km and connect districts such as Vikarabad, Medak, Siddipet, Kamareddy, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy. This corridor is expected to reduce operational pressure on Secunderabad station by diverting long-distance and suburban services.

SCR's broader expansion plan also includes strengthening multiple routes with triple and quadruple lines to manage higher traffic in the coming decades. The railway zone is also preparing for increased MMTS (suburban rail) services as part of its long-term capacity planning.

In addition to these new terminals, Hyderabad's existing stations have seen ongoing upgrades. The redevelopment of Secunderabad station, valued at around INR 700 crore, includes a roof plaza, improved passenger facilities and enhanced service integration. The government has also approved INR 1,169 crore for expanding MMTS lines, including six new corridors designed to improve suburban connectivity.

Together, these developments point to a gradual but steady transformation of Hyderabad's rail infrastructure framework, with both immediate upgrades and long-term projects progressing simultaneously.
